An exciting opportunity has arisen to join one of the largest microbiology departments in England as a Band 5 Biomedical Scientist.
Severn Pathology is a collaboration between UKHSA and North Bristol NHS Trust.
The microbiology partnership provides comprehensive routine services and specialist services to a wide range of hospitals across the South West and beyond and also assists in any UKHSA co-ordinated responses or activity of a national/international nature, e.g. Bioterrorism incident or major disease e.g enteric outbreaks, COVID-19, SARS.
The department employs around 120 staff and has a workload in excess of 1 million specimens covering major clinical specialties including respiratory medicine, transplantation, burns, renal medicine, urology & paediatrics.
We are seeking an enthusiastic and highly motivated HCPC registered BMS with post-registration experience and understanding in clinical Microbiology. Experience of using automated and manual molecular analysers and knowledge of the methodologies and techniques involved would be desirable. The post holder will work as part of the laboratory team, providing a high level of microbiological analysis in order to provide patients with the highest level of diagnosis and treatment.
Main duties of the job
- Evidence of previous supervision, health and safety and quality systems is essential as you will be responsible for supervising of junior staff in the department.
- Candidates will be encouraged to take a role in the development of training plans for all grades of staff as candidates will be expected to assist in the delivery of departmental training plans and competency assessment.
- The candidate will have played a role in the registration of trainee Biomedical Scientists with experience of completing the IBMS portfolio for registration. Opportunities for CPD are actively encouraged and supported. You should be a good team player with excellent interpersonal skills.
- Participate in audit processes, drug trials, research projects, as required.
- Participate in and monitor Quality Assurance and Quality Control, activities and assist the department in maintaining UKAS accreditation.
- To attend regular departmental meetings and contribute to effective communication with the department management.
- Ensure that personal work activity is managed to make effective use of time and maintain an adequate supply of laboratory consumables.
- Assist with the development of new methods and implementation of new technology.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The department embraces all aspects of a modern clinical bacteriology service combining traditional methodologies with laboratory automation.
It has a friendly atmosphere with good team spirit and offers the opportunity for you to develop personally and professionally.
The postholder will:
- Undertake on-going training and development and update Professional Development Plan, as required by the Laboratory Manager or Lead Biomedical Scientist.
- Be required to assess the suitability and appropriateness of samples received and liaises with senior technical staff for action or advice following departmental sample acceptance policy.
- Ensure data integrity when entering demographics and results into the laboratory information system.
- Perform sample preparation, processing bodily fluids and materials, including high.
- Analyse biological samples including more complex/ specialist investigations requiring a high level of skill.
- Work in high-risk Containment Level 3 laboratories following local code of practice within these facilities.

Essential criteria
- Biomedical Science (BMS) degree or equivalent academic achievement ratified by the IBMS
- State registration with The Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)
- Experience of using a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS)
- Able to train less qualified or experienced staff
- Ability to work on own initiative and organise own workload with minimal supervision working to tight and often changing timescales
- Skills for communication on complex information, requiring developed interpersonal and oral/ written communication skills.
- Technically adept at relevant laboratory procedures
