Job overview
The Selden Centre is a modern purpose-designed 10 bed inpatient assessment and intervention service for people with learning disabilities. Its fundamental aim is to support people back to community living.
From this safe and friendly environment our team of 30 multi-disciplinary
healthcare professionals offer individualised support, with opportunities for 1:1 therapeutic session’s to men and women who are referred into the service because of:
- Escalating needs in the community;
- Placement breakdown requiring reassessment of needs;
- Or step down from a more secure and /or high cost residential/ hospital service
As a Band 5 Staff Nurse at The Selden Centre you will share our belief that people with learning disabilities have the same rights as all members of society. You will work with our service users, their families and/or carers, referrers and service providers to determine the outcomes needed.
This post offers a incentive, or a Relocation package up to a maximum of £4000 (pro rata applies and subject to terms and conditions).
Main duties of the job
We work together to assess and develop appropriate interventions and care programmes to nurture the individual’s skills. You will work hand-in-hand with partner agencies and care managers to identify suitable future placements that meet the individual’s identified care and support needs for the future once they are discharged from our service.
Requirements:
To be a successful Staff Nurse at The Selden Centre, you will be:
- A Registered Nurse – We welcome newly qualified nurses, return to practice nurses and experienced nurses who are looking for a change within their current roles.
- Comfortable communicating and forming relationships with service users, families and the public
- Committed to a patient-centred way of working
- Enthusiastic about working with adults with learning disabilities

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
To deliver a high standard of evidence based inpatient nursing care in the designated care group in partnership with the team, the service users and where appropriate their family
- To act as a primary nurse in the assessment of needs and organising of care.
- To co-ordinate shifts and provide supervision for support workers and students.
- To work within a team of nurses and other professionals who are committed to the delivery of a quality service.
- To adopt a flexible approach to hours of duty, in order to meet the needs of the service over a 24-hour period.
- To take charge of a designated clinical area and deputise as appropriate.
- To represent the Ward Manager and/or care team, at appropriate forums and disseminate information as required.
- To represent the clinical team perspective at multidisciplinary meetings and clinical reviews of patient care.
- To be an active participant in the multi-disciplinary team, formulating care plans and utilising appropriate assessments.

Essential criteria
- Registered Nurse with current registration (LD/ mental health ) appropriate to the job role
Knowledge/Experience
Essential criteria
- Knowledge of MHA (1983/2007).
- Knowledge of Mental Capacity Act (2005), to include practical knowledge of FACE documentation, DOLS and Best Interest decisions
- Child and Adult safe guarding procedures
- Change management, organising and prioritising workloads.
- Demonstrate ability to enhance care through evidence based knowledge.
- Demonstrate professional development relevant to the care group
- Demonstrates ability to assess and manage clinical risk

You must have appropriate UK professional registration.
