We are seeking to appoint a Chaplain to work within the University Hospital of the North Midlands Trust, across the two hospital sites, Royal Stoke University Hospital and County Hospital, Stafford.  We are looking for an individual(s) who will share in our passion in providing excellence in Compassionate Care to patients, people important to them, carers, volunteers and staff.  High quality patient care is at the heart of everything we do and we strive to ensure every single patient and service user has an exceptional experience with us.  

You will be a Spiritual/Religious and Pastoral leader who is available to  work flexibly and creatively to facilitate and deliver effective spiritual, religious and pastoral care within our Acute Trust.  This will involve participating  in the 24/7 hour on call Chaplaincy rota in an adhoc manner and being available to respond within an hour to a call out of hours.

The successful candidate  will contribute to the effective working of the Chaplaincy- Spiritual, Pastoral and Religious  (SPaRC) team  by making provision for the  spiritual, pastoral and religious care  to meet the needs of patients, relatives, carers, bereaved families, staff, students and visitors of the University Hospitals of the North Midlands Trust.

The chaplain  will respond appropriately and always act within policies and guidelines of the UHNM. 

They will act autonomously in the absence of the Head and Deputy Chaplain and Band 6 Chaplains.

  Act with an inclusive concern for all patients, relatives, carers and staff including those of other faiths, beliefs and of no faith/belief.

Ensure that the spiritual, religious and pastoral needs of patients, visitors and staff, of all faiths and none, are met effectively, within a framework of client choice, appropriate to their cultural and religious expression, to the highest standard of care and within available resources.

Take responsibility for own caseload of patients and clients with wide-ranging and complex spiritual and religious needs

Continue to provide and develop a service of spiritual and pastoral care throughout the Trust by working with part-time chaplains, volunteers and other members of staff, which includes supervising or leading services at County and Royal Stoke University Hospitals on a rota basis.

Consult, refer and cooperate with the Multi-disciplinary Healthcare Teams and to advise on, to support and to provide for the spiritual and religious care of their patients, relatives, carers and staff.

  • You are educated to a Degree level qualification, in Healthcare Chaplaincy or a relevant subject. Alternatively, you have equivalent and relevant experience in Healthcare Chaplaincy
  • Ordination/ministry training or equivalent specialist experience in Healthcare Chaplaincy.
  • You are endorsed by a body belonging to a Network for Pastoral, Spiritual and Religious Care in Health group and of good standing with that body, and you are accredited and authorised by that Faith/Belief body to work as a Healthcare Chaplain
  • If you are an Ordained Christian Chaplain, you belong to a Church that is a member of Churches Together in England. You are of good standing with that Church and you can be accredited, licensed or authorised, and appointed by the Bishop, or the Denominational Church Lead
  • Committed to working in ecumenical and multi-faith settings

  • Leadership experience in a local faith community
  • Experience of healthcare chaplaincy in a hospital setting

  • Excellent interpersonal skills with an ability to work with people in stressful situations
  • Knowledge of spiritual and religious care and the related role of healthcare Chaplaincy.
  • Ability to work effectively with other colleagues and volunteers within the Trust, and in local Churches and Faith groups.
  • Ability to lead appropriate forms of prayer/reflection/worship, sensitive to the context and the needs of those present.
  • Team work, flexibility and group communication skills.
