Job overview

We are looking for Clinical Specialist Physiotherapist to work in our innovative and rapidly expanding Cancer Prehabilitation and Rehabilitation service.

The successful candidate will join the clinical leadership team of the Active Together service in Sheffield Teaching Hospitals, delivering multimodal prehabilitation and rehabilitation to patients receiving cancer treatment.   They will support to team in expanding the service to include additional tumour groups, and to continue to develop and improve the existing service.

 

Main duties of the job

To assess, plan and deliver or oversee exercise and physical activity treatment programmes for patients undergoing  oncology treatment pathways. 

Contribute to the provision of expert clinical practice with advanced clinical reasoning and support to staff on the programme team. 

To provide clinical leadership to develop staff and students within the service and deputise for the Consultant Allied Health Professional when necessary. 

To work with the Active Together team and collaborating organisations, co-ordinating, delivering and evaluating the physiotherapy service provided in the community setting 

Adopting a personalised care approach to management of patients, including an understanding of behaviour change approaches and “what matters to you” 

Provide leadership to the MDT team and day to day operational management of services and management of physiotherapy staff within the team. 

Contribute to evaluation and development of clinical practice ensuring compliance with national and local guidelines and frameworks.

Contribute to the evaluation of the service against Key Performance Indicators for feedback to Yorkshire Cancer Research.

Place the need to address health inequalities through Active Together as a priority in patient care and service development

Work with colleagues across the Active Together South Yorkshire service to collaborate in the development of services

Identify dietetic and psychological needs in patients and arrange appropriate onward care. 

 

Working for our organisation

This roles sits within the Active Together Sheffield service. 

Active Together is a prehabilitation and rehabilitation service supporting people following a cancer diagnosis with physical activity, nutrition, and wellbeing guidance. The service has been designed by Sheffield Hallam University who work in close collaboration with NHS teams to support the delivery and evaluation of the service. 

The Active Together service launched in Sheffield in 2022 and this year will expand to new sites across South Yorkshire in Barnsley, Rotherham and Doncaster. Active Together South Yorkshire will provide equitable, multi-modal and personalised prehabilitation and rehabilitation support that meets the needs of patients across the region and generates evidence for a commissioned service. This is an exciting opportunity to develop and deliver prehabilitation and rehabilitation pathways and help thousands of patients across South Yorkshire. 

Active Together is funded by Yorkshire Cancer Research, Yorkshire’s independent cancer charity, working so more people can live longer, healthier lives, free from cancer.

This vacancy is advertised on a fixed term contract basis for a period of 2 years due to the post being externally funded. The fixed term contract status of the post holder will be reviewed in accordance with the Trust's legal obligations regarding fixed term contracts taking into consideration the ongoing source of the external funding and the requirement for the post to be maintained.

Please also note any secondment must first be agreed with your current line manager.

Person specification

Education and Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Diploma/Degree in physiotherapy from a CSP recognised training establishment
  • Current HCPC registration
  • Demonstrate commitment to Continuous Professional Development via personal development plans/file
  • Evidence of relevant postgraduate development at Masters level in physiotherapy practice or equivalent experience
  • Training from Higher Education Institution for graduate physiotherapy student supervision
  • Trained in Basic Life Support
Desirable criteria
  • Trained in intermediate Life Support
  • Masters in oncology condition management/rehabilitation programmes

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Significant post-registration specialist experience in oncology / rehabilitation
  • Working experience in a wide range of core physiotherapy in different clinical settings
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in delivering community-based rehabilitation
  • Experience in clinical audit and continuous service improvement
  • Experience in delivering cardiac / pulmonary rehabilitation

Skills and knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Specialist understanding of oncology conditions, pathways and interventional procedures
  • Leadership skills to manage and supervise more junior clinicians
  • Ability to pass on skills/knowledge to others within both formal and informal environments
  • Ability to reflect and critically appraise own performance
  • Basic IT skills
  • Excellent time management skills with ability to manage a demanding workload and priorities effectively
  • Able to adapt to changing needs of the service
  • Ability to work on own initiative

  • Due to the requirement to undertake visits and transport non-portable equipment, the postholder is required to be either a car driver with a valid driving license, or have access to an alternative means of transport
