Job overview
A full-time post as Specialist Registrar in Cardiothoracic Surgery is available at the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, based primarily at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford. The Cardiothoracic unit provides a service which covers all aspects of adult Cardiothoracic Surgery (on and off pump CABG, aortic and mitral valve surgery, aortic aneurysm surgery, extended lung resection, VATS, stents and thymectomies), excluding Transplantation and Oesophageal Surgery.
Main duties of the job
The post-holder will participate in the service’s inpatient and outpatient activities. In general this will involve two or more days per week in theatre, regular MDTs and outpatient clinics and postoperative rounds. The post-holder will be expected to participate in the in-service training and teaching; training agreements will be made at the beginning of the appointment.
The post-holder will participate in the full-shift cardiothoracic registrar on-call rota (currently 1:8 resident on-call), dealing with all cardiothoracic referrals and covering the Cardiothoracic Critical Care Unit on a full shift rota.

Essential criteria
- GMC
- Completion of Core Surgical Training or equivalent
Experience
Essential criteria
- Good clinical care
- Maintaining good medical practice
- Good relationships and communications with patients, relatives, and colleagues
- At least 12 months’ experience in cardiothoracic surgery
Desirable criteria
- Interest in clinical research with publications
Skills & Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Sufficient leadership, organisational, and professional skills to undertake effectively the role
- Good spoken and written English
Desirable criteria
- Knowledge of the organisation of the NHS and the Government’s agenda for its modernisation
