Job overview

Sherwood Forest Hospitals are looking for a Children and Young Person Matron who is passionate about leading change and adding value to patient care. The post holder should be an experienced paediatric nurse leader who is enthusiastic, dynamic and keen to make a positive impact on nurse training, education, professional development, patient experience and continuously improving key performance indicators and improving the quality of patient care.

The post holder will work closely with the corporate nursing team and the triumvirate to monitor KPI's and identify service improvements. Our successful candidate will be supported to achieve their performance/personal objectives through appraisal and supervisory support from our Deputy Divisional Director of Nursing for Women and Children Division and Matron peers, creating opportunities to grow and develop to be the best they can be.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be responsible for managing the provision of the nursing service to a specified range of specialties within the division. Provide clinical, managerial, and professional leadership to children's inpatient and outpatient areas,  NICU, specialist nursing teams, play services and divisions across the trust where children and Young People may receive care. 

Assist the Divisional and Operations Service Managers to resolve capacity issues, as required. Oversee and ensure the effective assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of optimal quality patient care ensuring that nursing and health care standards are upheld. Be responsible for the development, implementation and evaluation of nursing and corporate strategies and standards within the division.

Be responsible for the effective management of human and financial resources in order to achieve the performance management targets of the division. Work in collaboration with other agencies/organisations to deliver national, regional, and local agendas relating to their directorate. Advise the organisation on relevant issues regarding their division.  Be responsible for the effective implementation of the responsibilities outlined in The Matron's Charter.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • RN/RM registration with the NMC
  • First level degree or equivalent knowledge
  • Qualification in teaching and assessing or equivalent
  • Demonstration of on-going professional development
  • Additional professional/management qualifications
Desirable criteria
  • Working towards Masters qualification or equivalent

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Extensive senior paediatric nursing experience within a complex organisation / NHS
  • Proven track record in leadership and management
  • Evidence of participating in and leading organisational change that has led to changes in quality
  • Experience of operating and communicating effectively with clinicians and Directors
  • Experience of working with external agencies and influencing internal change
  • Experience of initiating, conducting and evaluating risk assessments and investigations
  • Experience of leading and managing staff
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working towards Care Quality Commission and the NHS Resolution standards.

  • Experience of service improvement methodologies

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Good working knowledge of contemporary health care issues and professional standards within children services
  • Proven knowledge of the broader nursing, education and professional issues
  • Understanding of the complex dynamics of a multi-professional environment.
  • Excellent presentation and teaching skills
  • Excellent report writing skills and action planning
  • Ability to work under pressure
  • Computer literate
Desirable criteria
  • Sound general management experience – budget management skills, business case preparation, staff management
  • Evidence of operational and strategic development of patient safety initiatives and strategies
  • Experience in education and professional development.
