Highly Specialist Pharmacist - Antimicrobials

Job overview

Southport and Ormskirk Hospital have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a specialist antimicrobial pharmacist. We are looking recruit an experienced pharmacist with a keen interest in antimicrobial clinical pharmacy and antimicrobial stewardship to join our expanding clinical team. The successful applicant will take lead responsibility to support and implement quality-driven Antimicrobial Clinical Pharmacy Services to the Trust. This will ensure antimicrobial therapies are used in a safe, effective, prudent, patient-centred and efficient manner. 

Main duties of the job

The post holder will promote appropriate and cost-effective antibiotic prescribing across the Trust in collaboration with the Consultant Medical Microbiologists. You will lead in drug usage analysis, identification of budget pressures arising from new products, co-ordination of projects and audits and the development and maintenance of guidelines, policies and protocols relating to antimicrobials. The Trust is currently undergoing the implementation of EPMA and the post-holder will have a significant input into improved antimicrobial prescribing and therapeutic drug monitoring using electronic systems.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

You will have, or be working towards, a post graduate qualification in Clinical Pharmacy and will have recent experience in the pharmaceutical care of patients. You will be an excellent communicator, enthusiastic, adaptable, able to work both as a team member and as an individual.

Ideally you will have some experience of line-managing and/or mentoring junior pharmacists and trainees. Participation in teaching , clinical audit and practice research is encouraged and will be supported.

We also encourage development of Pharmacists in areas such as non-medical prescribing and management skills.

The post involves participation in the late night and weekend rota, and in the emergency cover on-call rota ( approximate frequency 1 in 20). The post holder will be based at Southport District General Hospital but may be required to work at other Trust sites on occasion.

This post will be subject to an Enhanced DBS (with barred list for vulnerable adult’s and children’s disclosure).

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registration as a Pharmacist with the GPhC
  • Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Pharmacy
Desirable criteria
  • Membership of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society
  • Non-medical prescriber

Knowledge and Experience

Essential criteria
  • Significant experience in Clinical Pharmacy
  • Experience in provision of antimicrobial clinical pharmacy
  • Experience in line managing and/or mentoring more junior pharmacists
Desirable criteria
  • Previous Pharmacy teaching experience

Skills and Abilities

Essential criteria
  • Experience in Clinical Audit and/or Practice Research projects
  • Commitment to Continual Professional Development
  • Ability to work as an individual and as a team member
