Less experienced candidates will start at Band 7 until demonstrating appropriate competencies for rebanding to 8A.
Following the recent transfer of Salford sexual health services to the Northern (MFT), we are keen to recruit an experienced psychosexual therapist who will work with Salford Sexual Health services providing specialised assessment and treatment for all forms of sexual dysfunction (with both physical and psychological factors). The postholder will be based with the Northern at their Salford Base and work alongside key MDT professionals in providing high quality care to those with identified psychosexual difficulties.
GMMH are the host trust in recruiting/employing psychosexual therapists, via an agreement with MFT. You will be employed by GMMH and will receive support and supervision from a small team of experienced psychosexual therapists in GMMH.
Main duties of the job
Role will include assessment, formulation and intervention of psychosexual difficulties, drawing on the established evidence base.
Provision of consultation to the wider MDT around psychosexual difficulties/presentations
Contributing to MDT approaches
Provision of supervision, as well as training/teaching where appropriate
Participating in relevant departmental meetings around the delivery and evaluation of services, as well as improvements.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- • Undergraduate degree (or equivalent) in relevant area e.g. Nursing, AHP, Social Work, Counselling, Psychotherapy
- • Post-Graduate Diploma in Psychosexual and Relationship Therapy
- • COSRT accredited/eligible for COSRT accreditation
Desirable criteria
- • Registration with BACP/UKCP or other counselling or psychotherapy accrediting body
- • MSc in Psychosexual Therapy/other relevant Masters degree
- • Training in Supervision
Experience
Essential criteria
- • Minimum of 3 years’ experience of working as a qualified psychosexual therapist (less experienced candidates may be appointed at Band 7 and work towards 8A competencies prior to rebanding)
- • Considerable experience in assessment and therapeutic work with adults (and their partners) with psychosexual difficulties in a relevant setting (e.g. health/third sector/charity)
- • Experience of maintaining a high degree of professionalism in the face of highly emotive and distressing problems, verbal abuse and the threat of physical abuse.
- • Experience of exercising full responsibility for service users’ psychosexual care and treatment, within the context of multidisciplinary care.
- • Experience of providing supervision (professional / clinical), teaching and / or training.
Desirable criteria
- • Experience of the application of psychosexual therapy in different cultural contexts.
- • Experience of representing psychosexual therapy services in multidisciplinary settings.
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Current knowledge of best practice and developments in psychosexual therapy including specifically: • Impaired sexual interest • Impaired sexual arousal • Erectile dysfunction • Ejaculatory disorders • Vaginismus • Sexual pain/discomfort • Sexual aversion and phobias
Desirable criteria
- Knowledge of how to work with associated difficulties often presenting within a psychosexual context e.g. Trauma, Addictions (including sexual addiction), physical health conditions
Skills
Essential criteria
- Highly developed skills in the use of complex methods of psychosexual assessment, intervention and management frequently requiring sustained and intense concentration.
- Ability to work effectively within a multi-disciplinary team and to liaise effectively with other professionals.
Desirable criteria
- Skills in providing consultation to other professionals and non-professional groups.
Other
Essential criteria
- Ability to teach and train others, using a variety of complex multi-media materials suitable for presentations within public, professional and academic settings
- Ability to identify, and employ, as appropriate, clinical governance mechanisms for the support and maintenance of clinical practice in the face of regular exposure to highly emotive material and challenging behaviour.
