Paediatric CKD and Pre-Renal Transplantation Clinical Nurse Specialist

The Nephrology Department at Royal Manchester Children's Hospital was established in 1967. It was the first paediatric nephrology service in the North of England, the first to offer a dedicated paediatric haemodialysis service in 1974 and our first kidney transplant took place in 1982. The department provides a comprehensive clinical and research service for children and young people with kidney disorders from a catchment population of 3.5 million across the North West of England.

This role is an exciting opportunity to join the wider Nephrology specialist nursing team as a Chronic Kidney Disease and Pre-Renal Transplantation Clinical Nurse Specialist. 

The post holder will work primarily with patients with chronic kidney disease at stages 4 & 5, and their families, to provide expertise and advice with an emphasis on timely access to the transplant programme.

The post holder will:

- Lead service delivery through the North West by managing and planning all aspects of the paediatric transplantation nursing service for the Trust.

- In conjunction with the lead professionals for Paediatric Nephrology, develop regional services at Alder Hey Children's Hospital, as well as support the development of nursing practice at AHCH relevant to renal transplantation.

- Work in partnership with the adult transplantation at the Manchester Royal Infirmary, to provide a living donor programme.

- Organise and lead multidisciplinary meetings

- Providing counselling to families on the process of transplantation, working within legal frameworks

- Provide information and updates as required by NHSBT

- Prepare and deliver nurse-led clinics for patients with chronic kidney disease, stages 4 and 5, including review of routine prescriptions, blood requests and therapy plans, supported where possible by Non-Medical Prescribing.

- Provide education to patients and families regarding health promotion, treatment compliance and medication reviews.

- Lead on transitioning patients to adult services

- Act as a specialist resource providing advice for junior medical staff and GPs, nursing staff within and external to the Trust.

- Participate in the Nephrology Specialist Nurse rota to provide support to the incentre Dialysis Unit.
