Job overview
The Emergency Department has an exciting opportunity for enthusiastic, highly motivated and dynamic Advanced Clinical Practitioners to join our growing team of ACPs.
At the Royal Free we strongly believe in the role of ACP's and actively strive to provide an environment that will assist you as an individual with autonomous practice and allow you to continue to develop your clinical and leadership skills. We are looking to expand our team of ACPs across the ED and are looking for practitioners with a nursing, AHP, paramedic or pharmacy background. The Consultants in our current team have varied sub-specialty interests and are experienced in mentoring ACPs through training and supporting with ongoing development.
You will be supported through regular clinical supervision, individual learning plans, on-going education and access to a rapidly expanding team of ACP’s to provide mentorship and support. There will be the opportunity to do secondments in other specialties. We run a regular teaching programme and there is access to quality improvement training and participation in projects.
The post holders will work in the emergency department and the same day emergency care unit. Applicants with a paediatric background will work in the paediatric emergency department. We would be interested to develop those who have a specialist skill or interest.

Main duties of the job
- Provide the core ACP role which is to assess, diagnose and treat patients with undifferentiated clinical presentations with appropriate supervision in the Emergency Department.
- Work within the ED doctor rota once deemed competent and completed appropriate competencies and participate in departmental teaching programme.
- Integrate with the multi-professional team within and outside of the Emergency Department and demonstrate effective multi-disciplinary team working.
- Participate in and/or lead clinical research which will guide practice developments.
- Ensure that Clinical Governance standards are fully met with annual involvement in QI/ Audit projects.
- Develop as a clinical leader and act as a positive role model.
- Promote and support trainee, new and experienced ACPs as well as others developing or working in advanced and specialist roles to maximise their potential.
- Contribute to the development of local guidelines and standards.
- Report to the Head of Nursing and Lead Consultant for the ACP programme acting as an expert team member for the effective delivery of the Advanced / Emergency Care Practitioner service.
Working for our organisation
The organisation and the Emergency Department Leadership is keen to grow an Advanced Clinical Practitioner workforce. The ED is extremely busy with the ability to extend your medical knowledge due to be specialist centre for renal and transplant medicine to name a few. We have grown how we deliver emergency care but expanding our Acute SDEC which is managed and delivered by our ED team.
The Trust is under new leadership and we are in the process of transitioning, with North Middlesex joining the Royal Free London Foundation NHS Trust. New challenges ahead. As we move out of winter and the recent NHS England target to achieve 76% in the 4 hour performance indicator for March 2024, we hope you are up for growing with us and being part of a team willing to champion transformation.
