Job overview

An exciting  new post has been created to provide advanced hand therapy assessment and treatment for patients referred  from the Emergency department and virtual fracture clinic. 

This is a new service and requires a motivated dynamic therapist. With the  support of the hand therapy lead the successful candidate will set up, run appraise this new service. 

You will need to build good working relationships with the emergency department and the team in virtual fracture clinic. Triage patients, providing timely assessment and referring on to other services or further investigations if required.  As well as the initial assessment you will provide advance hand therapy to enable patients to reach their full potential   following their hand injury. 

 

 

Main duties of the job

You will be based at the Homerton hospital, the post may also require some working virtually. 

Main duties: 

Manage the referrals from the emergency department and VFC. - Triage, assess patients, request appropriate  investigations, referring on to other professionals when required-eg: hand consultants, GP

Provide advanced treatment for a wide variety of traumatic and acquired hand conditions. 

Advanced skills in x-ray analysis  and clinical interpretation to plan and deliver advanced hand therapy.

Education

Essential criteria
  • HCPC registered Physiotherapist/ Occupational Therapist
  • Degree/diploma in Physiotherapy/Occupational Therapy
  • BAHT level II courses
Desirable criteria
  • Masters and Post-grad courses in hand therapy.

Skills/Abilities

Essential criteria
  • Advanced clinical reasoning skills which meets band 7 MSK Competency Framework
  • Specialist clinical skills e.g. splinting, X-ray interpretation, manual & manipulative therapy, pain management, exercise therapy, soft tissue treatment.
  • Ability to manage a case load of patients independently with complex hand injuries, acute and chronic pain
  • Ability to demonstrate team leadership skills, being able to lead, motivate and manage staff.
  • Ability to work autonomously and provide specialist leadership to more junior staff.
  • Experience of managing complex acute and chronic hand injuries & rehabilitation
Desirable criteria
  • Range of treatment approaches/philosophies. Principles of using evidence based practice

Experience

Essential criteria
  • experience at a senior level in Hand therapy care setting.
  • Substantive post qualification experience
  • Involvement in service improvements

Knowledge

  • Knowledge /understanding of confidentiality issues
  • Current in depth knowledge of musculoskeletal dysfunction and pain concepts
  • Awareness of current professional and health service issues.
  • Knowledge and understanding of NHS systems and pathways in relation to both primary care and secondary care management of musculoskeletal
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge meets level 7 MSK Competency Framework for band 7 FCPs
