Job overview

Are you an enthusiastic, motivated and committed pharmacy technician?  You will undertake pharmacy Dispensary -related duties  and will be based in Tower Hamlets, Mile End Hospital.  You will use pharmacy electronic  systems to co-ordinate and maintain supply of medicines to wards and work with the other technicians to improve stock systems and reduce waste. 

 You will be an Accredited checking technician training (ACT)

You should have a BTEC / NVQ Level 3 in Pharmaceutical Sciences or equivalent and be registered on the UK GPHC professional registration.

 

Main duties of the job

Dispensary duties- Mile End

To dispense medicines from prescriptions and ward requisitions under supervision, as and when required.

To ensure appropriate levels of ancillary stock (bottles, containers, bags etc) are maintained in the dispensary. This will involve overseeing the ordering of sufficient quantities and topping them up.

 

To put stock into the automated picking machine.

 

To return drugs to shelf/robot (if appropriate) ensuring shelves are kept clean, neat and tidy.

To assist with the receiving of goods, including checking off delivered goods against those ordered and putting them away in the appropriate place.

To ensure returned items are ‘credited’ appropriately and returned to the correct location (i.e the ‘robot’ or back onto the shelves)

To carry out expiry date checks in the department and on own wards and departments.

To be responsible for ensuring dispensary records are archived according to procedure

To assist with the filling of cardiac boxes

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To provide an efficient and timely supply of stock drugs to wards and departments within Mile End, Newham Centre for Mental Health, City & Hackney Centre for Mental Health, Luton and Bedfordshire and community mental health bases.

To ensure correct delivery procedures are followed with regard to all deliveries of stock made to clinics via the courier service.

To assist with the cover of the emergency Drug room on a daily basis

To assist with the update, storage and arrange delivery of Clozapine prescriptions to various sites

Educational/ Qualification

Essential criteria
  • Completion of a GPhC approved integrated competency and knowledgebased qualification/course (i.e. BTEC/ City & Guilds/NVQ3 pharmacy or equivalent)
  • Registered as a Pharmacy Technician with the GPhC
  • Nationally accredited with a medicine’s optimisation qualification
  • Mandatory CPD to maintain fitness to practice
Desirable criteria
  • Completed final accuracy checking training as part of the pharmacy technician qualification (post-2020) OR Nationally accredited with a final accuracy checking qualification (pre-2020)

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Hospital pharmacy post qualification experience
  • Success in a previous post requiring completion of work to deadlines
  • Working within a multidisciplinary team
  • Drug history taking
  • Ward based clinical work
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in tutoring and training
  • Previous experience of audit
  • Previous experience in providing clinical mental health services.

Knowledge/ Skills

Essential criteria
  • Awareness of the issues around quality and patient care
  • Be able to plan own activities on a day to day and ongoing basis
  • Understanding the hospital flow Knowledge of all regulations and legislation relevant to pharmacy, dispensary and clinical services
  • Knowledge of pharmacy computer and automation systems
  • Experience of using Microsoft software Be able to communicate effectively in both written and verbal formats with staff and patients
  • Able to work autonomously and productively within a team
  • Understanding the discharge process
Desirable criteria
  • Able to monitor, review and develop service standards
  • Knowledge of medicines and therapies used in the treatment of mental health conditions
  • Knowledge of legislation relevant to mental health
  • Experience of using EPMA – JAC
  • Experience of using RIO, JAC
  • Able to use Microsoft Excel/Word/Teams to intermediate level
