Senior Epidemiology Scientist

The United Kingdom Health Security Agency (UKHSA) is a system leader for health security; taking action internationally to strengthen global health security, providing trusted advice to government and the public and reducing inequalities in the way different communities experience and are impacted by infectious disease, environmental hazards, and other threats to health.

UKHSA’s remit, as an agency with a global-to-local reach, is to protect the health of the nation from infectious diseases and other external threats to health. As the nation’s expert national health security agency UKHSA will:

  • Prevent: anticipate threats to health and help build the nation’s readiness, defences and health security
  • Detect: use cutting edge environmental and biological surveillance to proactively detect and monitor infectious diseases and threats to health
  • Analyse: use world-class science and data analytics to assess and continually monitor threats to health, identifying how best to control and mitigate the risks
  • Respond: take rapid, collaborative and effective actions nationally and locally to mitigate threats to health when they materialise
  • Lead: lead strong and sustainable global, national, regional and local partnerships designed to save lives, protect the nation from public health threats and reduce inequalities.

At the United Kingdom Health Security Agency (UKHSA) our mission is to provide health security for the nation by protecting from infectious disease and external hazards.  We are a trusted source of advice to government and to the public, focusing on reducing inequalities in the way different communities experience and are impacted by infectious disease, environmental hazards, and other threats to health.

The Field Services Directorate (FSD) was established to provide a national comprehensive service which is geographically dispersed and integrates epidemiological, microbiological, infectious diseases and data sciences capacity and skills delivering surveillance and outbreak investigations consistently of the highest quality.

 

Prif ddyletswyddau'r swydd

The Senior Epidemiology Scientist works closely with colleagues to provide senior epidemiological support across a number of areas. Specifically, this post will provide senior scientific support to the epidemiological investigation of incidents and outbreaks of infectious diseases, supporting local Health Protection Teams and in collaboration with other partners. This will include leading and managing the technical and analytical aspects of epidemiological outbreak investigations and routine surveillance activities, and leading and supporting a team in carrying out these tasks.

Essential criteria - you will be assessed on the below 7 essential criteria, which have been selected from the Job Description.  

·       Educated to degree level in relevant subject or equivalent experience.

·       MSc in Epidemiology, or allied discipline or equivalent experience/education

·       Completion of the Field Epidemiology Training Programme or equivalent training and experience

·       Knowledge of principles and practice of surveillance, including data management, data transmission, data security, data quality, data analysis including descriptive statistics and  graphics and data reporting

·       Experience of interpreting and evaluating complex epidemiological data, sensitive health data analyses and performing analytical epidemiology and concepts in outbreak situations

·       Knowledge and experience of common statistical tests, modelling and analyses and interpret results appropriately, including for research purposes.

·       Experience of effective line management

·       PhD or equivalent publication record in relevant subject

·       Experience of research activities with a suitable publication record (3+ papers including 1+ first author) and grant writing experience

·       Experience of using advanced epidemiological and statistical software packages

Stage 1: Application & Sift  

Competency-based assessments  
 You will be required to complete an application form. You will be assessed on the 7 essential criteria listed above, and this will be in the form of   

  • a CV/ Application form (‘Employer/ Activity history’ section on the application) 
  • a 1000 word Statement of Suitability.  

This should outline how you consider your skills, experience, and knowledge, provide evidence of your suitability for the role, with reference to the essential criteria.

Stage 2: Interview (competency based) 

 You will be invited to a face to face interview 

 Knowledge, experience, skills & abilities will be tested at interview   

 You will be required to present a 10 minute presentation.

Location information 

 UKHSA operates a hybrid working model where business needs allow.  This provides us with greater flexibility about how and where we work, to get the best from our workforce. As a hybrid worker, you will be expected to spend a minimum of 60% of your contractual working hours (approximately 3 days a week pro rata, (averaged over a month) working at either one of UKHSA's locations in Leeds or Newcastle upon Tyne.  Specialist or regional roles will be based at  the appropriate UKHSA site.

Open to all external applicants (anyone) from outside the Civil Service (including by definition internal applicants).   

  Security Clearance Level Requirement   

 Successful candidates must pass a disclosure and barring security check.   

 Successful candidates for this role must pass an enhanced disclosure and barring security check before they can be appointed.   

 Successful candidates must meet the security requirements before they can be appointed. The level of security needed is Basic Personnel Security Standard.

Starting salary  

Entrants to the Civil Service are expected to start on the minimum of the pay band.    

The internal roles rules apply to existing Civil Servants, i.e. level transfers move on current salary or the pay range minimum, transfers on promotion move to new pay range minimum or receive 10% increase.    

Either case is determined by whichever is the highest.
