An exciting opportunity has arisen within Intermediate Care Therapy services in South East Essex for an Occupational Therapy Apprentice. Are you looking for pursuing a career in Occupational therapy but would like to continue to work as an OT assistant whilst studying ? The role sits within the Intermediate Care Services covering admission avoidance and reablement therapy provision.  The services within intermediate care include:

- Urgent community response team

- Frailty virtual ward

- Re-ablement

- Domiciliary rehabilitation for unstable fractures and complex neuro 

- Recovery to home residential home beds

The OT apprentice will be supported by experienced Senior Occupational Therapists, but also work along side physiotherapy and nursing colleagues as part of an MDT. 

The successful applicant will be supported in applying to either the University of Hertfordshire or University of Essex to start their study in Autumn 2025. University attendance is 1 day per week, with 4 days per week working within their OTA role within Intermediate Care Services. There will be full time student placements in other clinical areas.  

Due to the community nature of the post it is essential that applicants have a full UK driving licence and access to a car for work purposes.  Please ensure you meet the academic requirements in the Personal Specification prior to applying.

ROLE SUMMARY

·         As an employee of Essex Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust the post holder would be working towards a BSc (Hons) Occupational Therapy degree in partnership with the University of Essex/Hertfordshire with ‘on’ and ‘off’ the job learning.

·         The apprentice will be based within the Community Intermediate Care Team within South East Essex. The apprentice will work as part of the community therapy provision implementing Occupational Therapy interventions under the direction of qualified staff to patient’s within intermediate care services including Frailty Virtual Ward, Re-ablement and Admission avoidance. The nature of the interventions will change as the post holder acquires and applies theory to practice reflecting knowledge gained through study.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

CLINICAL – As a development post the level of responsibility at which these duties are undertaken will be adjusted as determined by your acquisition and application of theory to practise

 

1.    To support intermediate care occupational therapists in the implementation of treatment programmes.

2.    To carry out one to one interventions as directed by Senior Occupational Therapy staff.

3.    To develop rapport with clients to encourage their interest in skills.

4.    To be aware of individual clients/patients needs through communication with other staff.

5.    To observe general behaviour, ability and response of clients/patients to activities.

6.    To have an awareness of the situations that may make clients/patients vulnerable or at risk.

7.    To report any concerns immediately to qualified staff.

8.    To respect clients/patients choices and confidentiality at all times.

9.    To record interventions in an agreed format.

10.  Any other tasks delegated by qualified staff as appropriate to grade and experience.

 

ADMINISTRATION:

1.    To support the administration of the team as required.

2.    To complete necessary statistical information, e.g. daily diary sheets.

3.    To note any faulty equipment and inform qualified staff.

4.    To ensure work areas are kept clean and tidy.

 

PROFESSION/ROLE SPECIFIC DUTIES:

1.    You will attend University 1 day a week during term time and complete all the necessary standards and practise hours set out within the Apprenticeship.

2.    You will fulfil full-time attendance on practise placements away from the work setting to meet the required number of practise placement hours.

3.    You will ensure all pre-placement requirements are met and fulfilled in a timely manner.

4.    You will maintain progress within the apprenticeship program

5.    You will have a good level of written and verbal communication skills to fulfil the requirements of both the workplace and the apprenticeship.

6.    Attend professional Occupational Therapy/Intermediate Care Therapy meetings as required.

7.    To comply with policies and agreed procedures for annual leave, sickness and time owing.
