Job overview

Working Full Time: 37.5 Hours Per Week 

Countess of Chester Hospital NHS Trust is looking for a motivated and enthusiastic Cyber Security Senior Specialist. You will be joining a friendly high performing Digital team that is committed to the delivery of services for all our patients and staff.

The post holder will be an expert in Cyber Security. They will provide support and implement the effective operational management of the Cyber Security agenda across the Trust, ensuring the protection of systems utilized to support patient and back-office functions. This person is expected to become expert in and remain up to date with policies, procedures, legislation, and good practice surrounding Cyber Security.
This is a varied hands-on role that involves working closely with all areas of Digital and the wider organisation to promote and develop a security first approach and practice so that we can defend as one.

Main duties of the job

  • Monitor the changes in global cyber security threats and continually react to those threats. Implement appropriate checks and controls to protect the Information Assets held and managed by the organisation
  • Identify and address any potential and actual cyber security vulnerabilities in infrastructure and applications.
  • Ensure all services are protected from malware and other emerging threats.
  • Continually assess options for the ongoing improvements in Cyber Security services, controls and procedures to maintain effective Cyber Security defenses as the threat vector changes.
  • Develop Cyber Security procedures based on best practice, advice, and guidelines
  • Plan, organise and coordinate digital asset and system patching, in conjunction with critical health care services and other stakeholders

Working for our organisation

The Countess of Chester Hospital NHS Foundation Trust provides services to West Cheshire and to Welsh patients covered by Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board. The Trust works collaboratively within the wider Cheshire and Merseyside Health and Care Partnership. Its services are provided from three locations:

  • The Countess of Chester Hospital: providing 438 general and acute beds.
  • Ellesmere Port Hospital: providing 56 beds as a rehabilitation, intermediate and outpatient facility.
  • Tarporley War Memorial Hospital: a base for community services which serve the local rural population.

The Trust employs over 6258 staff (headcount) which includes temporary bank staff and provides acute emergency and elective services, primary care direct access services and obstetric services to a population of approximately 407,000. This includes 357,000 residents in Chester and West Cheshire which includes Ellesmere Port and Neston as well as the Deeside area of Flintshire which has a population of approximately 50,000.

The Trust is a busy district general hospital and in 2022/2023, there were more than 503,342 patient attendances (inpatient, outpatient and diagnostic) ranging from a simple outpatient appointment to major cancer surgery. This is an increase of nearly 10,000 compared to the previous year when there were 494,387 patient attendances.

Please note applicants will be required to pay for their DBS check. Costs are deducted from salary following appointment. The cost of the DBS application is £23 (standard) or £43 (enhanced), this cost will be deducted from your salary over the first three months of employment.

You are encouraged to enrol for the DBS Update Service. A small annual fee of £13 per year applies.

New entrants to the NHS will commence on the minimum of the scale stated above.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Educated to Degree Level in Cyber Security
  • Cyber security qualifications or equivalent experience.
Desirable criteria
  • Membership of professional body, ISC2, BCS, CREST etc
  • ITIL qualification
  • Project Management qualification

Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria
  • COMPTIA or equivalent level of work experience and knowledge
  • Detailed working knowledge of Desktop and Server or network security
  • Good understanding of Cyber Security best practices, standards, certifications, and terminology.
  • Relevant experience working in Cyber Security, using relevant industry standard Security products and tools.
Desirable criteria
  • Development of training packages.
  • Application of Cyber Security in a healthcare environment.

Skills & Abilities

Essential criteria
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal when dealing with highly technical subjects and ability to translate
  • Ability to undertake Root Cause Analysis of security incidents & analyse the data
  • Excellent written skills to present highly technical subjects.
