Fixed/term/secondment for 36 months  

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a dynamic and innovative individual.

The Intensive Support Team works with individuals who have a learning disability, with additional complex and high risk needs, who may require a crisis intervention and intensive support to prevent placement breakdown, an admission to hospital or following discharge from an inpatient setting where required. The IST works with people within Birmingham and also people who are out of area to support the transforming care agenda.

The Intensive Support Team  at BCHC is an MDT that work collaboratively to support adults in the community of Birmingham with learning disabilities, this encompasses a variety of complex and challenging behaviours which would give the ideal candidate a great opportunity to develop their skills and create a fantastic career pathway through the specialty.

Main duties of the job

The IST is proud to value themselves as a person-centred service, that works closely with the patient and family towards understanding and supporting the need of the individual in the least restrictive way.  The service offers a variety of interventions due to its MDT resources and  can offer a personalised plan for the service user, which can then be in-cooperated into the individual’s Positive Behaviour Support plan.

You will have experience in both Occupational Therapy and Speech and Language Therapy. Must be flexible with excellent communication skills and a passion for integrated team working. As a Therapy Assistant you will work within the framework of a MDT to provide support and guidance to adults with learning disabilities and  carers within the Birmingham area.

Applicants should have experience of working with individuals who have a learning disability and the appropriate skills, knowledge and experience in relation to autism, challenging behaviour and mental health within an integrated model of service delivery.

You will have a extensive experience within Learning Disabilities. Car Driver and access to a car for work purposes essential.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • NVQ3 or equivalent qualification.
  • Willing to undertake departmental and external training.
  • BTec SLTA/OTA qualification.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Has experience of working with people with learning disabilities/communication difficulties/behaviours that challenge, in health or third sector setting.
  • Is able to independently carry out tasks with a degree of planning and autonomy.
  • Is able to play an active role in a team.
  • Is able to reflect on own skills and support others in developing reflective practice through supervision.
  • Is able to demonstrate an ability to plan and implement work based activities in individual and/or group situations.
  • Has experience of training other professionals.
  • Has experience of supervision of others in work situations.

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Has excellent written and spoken communication skills.
  • Has literacy skills to a level to be able to extract information and summarise in clinical notes.
  • Has knowledge of specific SLT/OT procedures/worked with an SLT/OT.
  • Able to organise and carry out accurate observations of the communication and interaction skills of clients and their communication partners in various environments, and suggest next course of action.
  • Has knowledge of communication/engagement and is able to promote this in all environments by modeling and through explanation.
  • Is able to independently manage and organise time for a range of people within agreed timescales.
  • IT literate and able to use a range of specialist programmes.
  • Has experience of delivering a communication/engagement programme.
  • Able to support and train multi-agency team/parents or carers to work with individuals to develop, implement and evaluate programmes.
Desirable criteria
  • Has experience of producing and modifying resources and equipment for people with difficulties in communicating/engaging.
