Highly Specialist Clinical Psychologist

We are excited to have been awarded charitable funds to pilot dedicated psychology support for those living with, or at risk of, rare and inherited conditions within the West Midlands.  This post, based in Clinical Genetics at Birmingham Women’s Hospital, within a mutually supportive team of Clinical Geneticists and Genetic Counsellors, is an exciting opportunity to lead and shape the development of psychological services for children, adults and young people with and at risk of rare and inherited disease.  

The post holder will, in conjunction with the senior management team and additional psychologist in clinical genetics, help to develop new assessment and psychosocial pathways in the clinical genetics team.  They will be key in designing, refining and evaluating the psychological clinical pathways in the genetics service, input into the wider clinical genetics and health in mind teams and contribute to the management structure.  Clinically, they will undertake cognitive assessments and therapeutic interventions to the most complex patients, supporting the triage of cases appropriately to other team members.

The post holder will be based within the Regional Clinical Genetics Service and work closely with and regularly supported by the Health in Mind team, including clinical psychologists, neuropsychologists and a Liaison psychiatrist. They will provide input as part of the multi-disciplinary team and be expected to: 

 

  • Lead and develop the Clinical Genetics Psychology Service including shaping the design, oversight, implementation and evaluation of psychological therapies for adults, children and families with rare and/or inherited disease.
  • Develop and provide a range of highly specialist cognitive and psychological assessments, formulations and interventions within a coherent framework that draws upon a range of psychological theory, explanatory models and evidence.
  • Manage patients with the more complex and severe psychological issues and psychiatric disorders and provide support to their families and carers as appropriate.
  • Provide supervision and training to clinical psychology staff working within clinical genetics team 
  • Offer regular teaching and/or training to local multidisciplinary team and wider networks
  • Manage the use of reporting metrics and facilitate the evaluation of key deliverable milestonesto ensure service delivery meets agreed standards/ contract agreements and submit regular reports to stakeholders

You will be responsible to and supported by the Health in Mind team, an enthusiastic and dynamic team of Psychologists who value our professional identity, therapeutic expertise, leadership, education of others and role in service development. Our services provide opportunities for your skills to be nurtured and developed from the moment you join, through opportunities to practice and harness your core therapeutic skills, reflective practice via team development sessions, peer support groups and continual review of individual training needs. 

This is an initial 12 month pilot generously funded through charity and will include evaluating the service and evidencing the value of psychological services in this group to obtain continued funding and service provision.
