Job overview

We are seeking an enthusiastic and conscientious individual with a special interest in epidemiology to lead the epidemiology program in Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Trust. They will also support the existing senior management team in leading the service.

Main duties of the job

Lead the epidemiology team to fulfil the epidemiology requirements for BCHC.

To provide high quality dental treatment for children with a wide range of high treatment needs including those who have special needs and are unable to access care in the General Dental Service.

To carry out the full range of clinical procedures, including inhalation sedation.

To support the undergraduate and post graduate teaching within BCHC.

The post holder may be required to move between different community dental clinics and work in a mobile dental unit.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To undertake duties as part of the clinical team necessary for the fulfilment of the current service contract(s) into which the Service has entered with Commissioners.

Clinical sessions will involve the provision of high quality specialised dental care for children and adolescents with disability, medical, mental health problems or dental anomalies. This includes provision of treatment under inhalation, intravenous sedation and general anaesthesia. It also includes any related domiciliary care under NHS regulations. There is an expectation that the post holder will keep up to date on advancements in clinical techniques and train other clinicians in the service as required.

The post holder will plan and manage care where there are complex disability, medical, mental health or behavioural issues liaising closely as necessary with senior clinical colleagues and medical, mental health and other professionals and/or carers.

 

Clinical sessions will take place in Community Clinics across Birmingham and the Black Country, schools, and other hospitals. The post holder will be required to move to different locations as per the needs of the service.

 

They will actively contribute to the work of the specialised team in developing the service, providing advice for other clinicians and covering for absent colleagues.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • BDS or Equivalent
  • Full registration with the GDC
  • VT or Equivalent
  • Extensive management and leadership training
  • Evidence of participation in continued education and supervision courses to support the teaching element of the role
  • Postgraduate qualifications in Paediatric Dentistry

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Extensive experience of working within the community dental service
  • Experience of providing oral healthcare assessments and treatment under conscious sedation and General Anesthesia as required
  • Experience of treating children with additional care needs and complex social situations
  • Familiarity with GDC regulations
  • Understanding the aims/role of the Community Dental Services
  • Experience in leading and participating in epidemiology programs
  • Extensive leadership/management experience
  • Experience of chairing meetings
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working in a secondary and tertiary care setting
