Job overview

We are currently looking to recruit an innovative, enthusiastic and motivated band 6 Sister/Charge Nurse within our Cardiac Catheter Lab Recovery at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust (UHS). The position will involve leading a team of nurses working in this diverse and friendly unit. We are a dedicated team, proud of the care, service and experience that we offer and provide for our patients. The care group has a local, national and international reputation of delivering expert specialised care.

The catheter lab and day unit is purpose-built and designed to house four fully equipped cardiac catheter labs, a hybrid Lab, a six-bay recovery area for adults and paediatric patients post general anaesthetic (GA) and a 13-bedded cardio-vascular day case unit, which accommodates up to 25 patients a day.

The cardiac catheter lab day unit runs from Monday to Friday, from 07:15 –21:00 with the catheter labs being open from 08:00 to 18:00.

What you’ll do


In this post you will be an integral part of the senior team. Candidates will need to demonstrate a passion for high-quality, patient-centred care and the necessary skills and knowledge to deliver it. You will need to be motivated, and enthusiastic and enjoy working as part of a multi-disciplinary team. GA recovery skills and paediatric experience would be an asset. You should be forward-thinking, as well as eager to develop your own clinical and management skills.  You will enjoy the challenge of working in a busy environment, under pressure and be an effective multi-tasker.

You will be expected to take charge of the Day unit on a daily basis. It is essential that you are good at promoting cooperation, building teams and developing people for the future, as well as focusing on your own professional growth.

 

Main duties of the job


•    To assist the Senior Sister/Charge Nurse in the daily nursing management of the Cardiac Catheter Lab Recovery area, supporting the Catheter Labs and/or Day Unit when required dependent on experience.
•    To deputise in the absence of the Senior Sister/Charge Nurse, taking full responsibility for the nursing management of the Cardiac Catheter Labs and Day Unit
•    To provide clinical expertise in the field of Interventional Cardiology, Congenital and Electrophysiology, specifically recovery for patients undergoing GA/ sedation for their procedure
•    To efficiently manage patient recovery and safe transfer of patients to the ward
•    To be responsible for maintaining high standards of nursing practice with reference to relevant research in accordance with local and Trust policies
•    To develop the recovery pathways and help expand the services
•    To educate and train staff in GA recovery of adult and paediatric patients

Essential criteria
  • Qualified Nurse (Degree/Diploma)
  • Registered nurse on appropriate part of the register
  • Significant post registration experience / qualification / training, including experience and knowledge within relevant speciality

Knowledge and experience

  • Experience in an acute hospital setting
