Allied Health Professions: Requirements and registration

Ambulance Care Assistants, Technicians and Paramedics

These are the professionals who staff ambulances. Paramedics are the senior members of emergency ambulance crews and are trained in all aspects of emergency care.

Entry Requirements

Minimum educational requirements to enter the service vary. It is advisable to check with individual NHS Ambulance Trusts, but in general ambulance services require candidates to hold at least four GCSEs at grades A - C or suitable alternatives.

Applicants are usually required to be a minimum of 18 years old and all new entrants must pass a medical examination, hold a clean driving licence and be able to pass a series of entrance exams. Some services conduct a police check on staff who will have substantial access to children.

Paramedics are State registered by the Health Professions Council (HPC)
